Grit City Pilates

Move Better. Feel Better. Live Better.

Pilates instruction, movement assessment, and individualized care in Tacoma

Grit City Pilates is the movement-focused side of Grit City Health.

I have practiced and taught Pilates since 2007, and it continues to shape how I understand movement, teach strength and mobility, and work with people experiencing pain, tension, or physical limitations.

You can come to Grit City Health specifically to learn and practice Pilates… much as you would at a private Pilates studio. You can also experience Pilates-based movement as part of a more integrated session combining movement assessment, functional exercise, massage, and bodywork.

Every session is private, individualized, and built around what you want your body to do better.

Pilates is more than a workout here

Pilates can be an effective way to build strength, improve coordination, explore mobility, and become more confident in how your body moves.

It can also help us understand what may be contributing to discomfort or difficulty with a particular movement.

A simple exercise may reveal that you move differently from one side to the other, have difficulty coordinating part of a movement, or rely heavily on one area to accomplish what you are asking your body to do. That information can help guide the exercises we choose, the cues we use, and where hands-on care may be most useful.

The goal is not to judge whether you move “correctly.” It is to better understand how you currently move and help you develop more options.

Two ways to work with Pilates

Private Pilates and movement sessions

If you want to learn Pilates, return to it, or use it to become stronger and more capable, we can build an entire session around movement.

Depending on your goals, sessions may include:

  • Pilates Reformer and Springboard exercises

  • Mat-based Pilates

  • Functional strength training

  • Mobility and balance work

  • Resistance bands, kettlebells, and other equipment

  • Exercises you can continue at home

You do not need previous Pilates experience, a particular body type, or an athletic background. Sessions can be adapted for beginners, experienced Pilates clients, active adults, and athletes.

Pilates-informed bodywork sessions

Pilates-based movement can also be used as an assessment tool before bodywork.

Rather than looking only at where something feels tight or uncomfortable, we can explore how your body responds when you squat, rotate, reach, balance, breathe, or coordinate a specific movement. We can then use that information to guide massage and bodywork before reassessing how the movement feels afterward.

Some appointments may be mostly movement. Others may be mostly hands-on work. Many include a thoughtful combination of both.

What might a session look like?

A session may begin with a conversation about what you are noticing and what you would like help with. From there, we may use a few Pilates or functional movements to explore strength, mobility, coordination, and movement patterns.

Depending on what we find and what you want from the appointment… we might:

  • Continue with a Pilates-focused workout

  • Practice a few targeted exercises

  • Transition to massage or functional bodywork

  • Combine movement and hands-on work throughout the session

  • Finish by returning to the original movement and noticing what changed

There is no required formula. The session develops around your goals, your preferences, and what seems most useful that day.

Who is Grit City Pilates for?

Grit City Pilates may be a good fit if you:

  • Want private Pilates instruction without joining a large studio

  • Are new to Pilates and want individual guidance

  • Prefer exercise that can be adapted to your body and experience

  • Want to improve strength, mobility, balance, or body awareness

  • Keep encountering the same tightness or limitation

  • Want to understand how your movement may relate to what you are feeling

  • Would benefit from combining exercise with massage or bodywork

  • Are preparing for, participating in, or returning to an activity you enjoy

You do not have to consider yourself an athlete. You only need something you would like to understand, practice, or improve.

Pilates within Grit City Health

Grit City Health brings movement, bodywork, and coaching together rather than treating them as completely separate services.

Pilates provides a framework for observing movement and building strength and control. Massage and bodywork can help address tension, sensitivity, and restrictions that may make movement more difficult. Functional exercise helps connect what we practice in the studio to daily life, work, recreation, and sport.

You are always welcome to book a fully Pilates-focused appointment. The broader Grit City Health approach simply gives us more options when Pilates alone is not the whole answer.

Start with what you want help with

You do not need to know which exercises you need or whether your appointment should be “Pilates,” “fitness,” or “bodywork.” You can sign up for any session and get the help that you need.

Tell me what you are noticing, what you want to be able to do, or what has been getting in your way. We will start there.
