Frequently Asked Questions About
Grit City Health
Grit City Health brings massage, Pilates-based movement, fitness, and health & performance coaching together in one private Tacoma studio. You don't need to know exactly which service you need before getting started. Tell me what you're working on, what you're noticing, or what you'd like to be able to do, and we'll start there.
-
GCH works with competitive athletes, recreational athletes, active adults, and people who don't consider themselves athletes at all. You might be training for a 100-mile race, trying to feel better after sitting at a desk all week, returning to exercise after years away, or simply looking for a really good massage.
You don't need to prove your fitness before you walk through the door. We start with the human first.
-
Absolutely.
Massage is still massage here. You don't need to exercise, perform a movement assessment, or turn your massage appointment into a workout.
If you want your session to be focused entirely on therapeutic massage, recovery, and relaxation, it can be. The advantage of the broader GCH approach is simply that movement, Pilates, and exercise are available when they would be useful, not that they are required.
-
Yes. Grit City Health offers therapeutic and sports massage at our private studio in Tacoma, Washington.
My background in Pilates, fitness, health coaching, cycling, running, and endurance sports influences how I approach sports massage. We can consider not only where something feels tight or uncomfortable, but also what you're asking your body to do in training, competition, work, and everyday life.
You don't have to be injured—or even be an athlete—to book massage.
-
Yes, and this is one of the things that makes Grit City Health a little different.
A session might begin with Pilates-based movement or a simple movement assessment, transition into massage or bodywork, and then return to movement afterward. Other appointments may be almost entirely massage or entirely Pilates.
There isn't a required formula. We can use the time in whatever way best supports your goals that day.
-
New clients begin with an 80-minute New Client Intake Session, with additional time blocked around the appointment so the experience doesn't feel rushed.
We'll talk about what brought you in, your history, what you're currently noticing, and what you'd like to be able to do or feel differently. From there, the session may include movement assessment, Pilates-based exercise, massage/bodywork, and relaxation depending on your goals.
You'll leave with a better understanding of the GCH approach and we'll discuss what, if anything, makes sense as a next step. There's no pressure to commit to an ongoing plan.
-
Very much so.
Running and cycling are a significant part of the health & performance side of GCH. Support can include massage and recovery, strength training, movement work, training structure, event preparation, pacing and effort strategies, and endurance coaching.
I also understand that athletes have jobs, families, stress, sleep needs, and lives outside of their sport. The goal isn't simply to fit more training into your week. It's to help your training fit into your life.
-
Yes.
You don't need to “get fit first” before coming to GCH. Returning after an injury, illness, stressful period, major life change, or simply a long stretch without consistent exercise is a perfectly reasonable place to start.
We can establish where you are now, identify what feels manageable, and gradually rebuild strength, movement, fitness, and confidence without expecting you to immediately return to what you used to be able to do.
When medical evaluation or rehabilitation is appropriate, GCH can also work alongside the care you're receiving from qualified medical or rehabilitation professionals.
-
Yes. Grit City Health offers individualized private Pilates instruction at our Tacoma studio.
I've practiced and taught Pilates since 2007, and it remains a major part of how I approach movement, strength, mobility, and body awareness.
Sessions can be completely Pilates-focused or can incorporate functional strength, mobility, massage, or bodywork. Beginners are welcome, and you don't need previous Pilates experience or a particular level of fitness to start.
-
Yes.
GCH offers health, strength, and endurance coaching for people ranging from those establishing a sustainable exercise routine to experienced runners and cyclists preparing for events.
Coaching can include strength programming, endurance training, event preparation, recovery planning, training adjustments, and help fitting all of those pieces into the rest of your life.
You can use coaching independently or combine it with the movement and bodywork sides of Grit City Health.
-
Absolutely.
You don't need to give up the training tools that are already working for you just to have a coach.
Cyclists may continue using TrainerRoad for day-to-day workout execution while TrainingPeaks provides a larger view of training, events, communication, and adjustments. Runners and other endurance athletes may use TrainingPeaks more directly for their programming.
Technology can do an excellent job of providing workouts and analyzing training data. My role is to help add the human context: work, family, stress, recovery, changing goals, confidence, event strategy, and all the other things an algorithm can't fully understand.
-
Grit City Health is not a physical therapy clinic, and I am not a physical therapist.
Physical therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who evaluate, diagnose, and rehabilitate injuries and medical conditions within their scope of practice.
GCH provides massage therapy, Pilates-based movement, fitness, and health & performance coaching. We can work on strength, mobility, body awareness, recovery, movement confidence, and returning to activities you enjoy, but those services don't replace appropriate medical evaluation or physical therapy.
GCH can also complement physical therapy or other healthcare when appropriate.

Grit City Health is a good fit for people who want support without unnecessary pressure.
You might want to:
Feel better and reduce everyday tension
Become stronger or more confident moving your body
Return to exercise after time away
Better understand how training, recovery, work, stress, and life fit together
Have someone help you make decisions without taking ownership of the process away from you
You don't have to identify as an athlete. You don't have to be pain-free. You don't need a perfectly defined goal.
You just need somewhere to start.
Still have a question?
